Grandpa’s Hetu

2025

In this era driven by algorithms—where even AI can tell fortunes—my grandfather still practices the most traditional method, quietly tracing lines and symbols by hand.
He has never made a living from it. After graduating from Tongji University in 1968, he worked in engineering and later taught various subjects until retirement. In the 1990s, he stumbled upon Ten Conversations on the I Ching and became deeply absorbed. Since then, his desk has been filled with self-made divination tools and notebooks filled with handwritten calculations.
Beneath the glass of his desk lies a note I scribbled ten years ago: “Do good deeds, ask not about the future.” My grandfather continues to read fortunes for family and friends, never asking for anything in return. Calm and focused, he remains immersed in his spiritual world, sketching his cosmic diagrams with pen and paper.
The starting point of this project came from a casual conversation at the family dinner table. My grandfather was talking about helping a friend choose an auspicious date for construction. It suddenly struck me that in this age of rapidly advancing AI, even practices like fortune-telling and divination are now being touched by algorithms.
Unlike visual arts or design, which naturally lend themselves to digital tools, divination has always been a deeply personal, intuitive, and manual process, filled with handwritten symbols and quiet rituals. The intrusion of AI into this ancient, delicate practice feels almost absurd, yet it reflects the strange reality we live in.
This project is both a personal dialogue with my grandfather and a quiet response to the surreal tension between tradition and technology.
